Credit Cards

I'm thinking of getting a credit card as a student, what are my options?

I know about the DBS Live Fresh Visa Student Card, Maybank eVibes and CIMB AWSM card. What are the pros and cons for each and which do you guys think is the best card overall? Also, should I wait till I start earning a steady salary before I get a credit card?

Depending on which bank your high saving account is at, the answer can be different. Personally i uses the DBS Livefresh for 5% cashback, min spending $600. Able to qualify for my DBS mutiplier account criteria too.

Hi Anon, you may want to consider Maybank eVibes credit card specially for students? It gives you 1% cash rebate on all spend, i.e. there are no merchant or category restrictions to earn cash rebate. There's also an Adidas wristwatch when you sign up for the card!

If you really want a credit card as a student, I think DBS Live Fresh Student card is not bad. They have ~%5 cashback for online shopping, and occasionally have promos for restaurants.

BUT, I actually feel that if you are still in school and not earning money yet, you should just stick to debit cards for the time being. You don't want to cultivate a habit of spending beyond your means and getting into credit card debt!

If you can manage and control your expenses, then you can consider getting a credit card. However, this is if and only if the credit card will not alter the way you spend your money.

To do this, the best way is always to ensure that you spend money that you have, rather than to spend on future money. E.g. I have $300 in my bank and decide to swipe $500 for an item. Since the credit card bill comes in a month later, I have nothing to worry about. In this scenario, it is a bad habit and you run into risk of credit card debt.

If you want a simple card that works for most purposes, then go for DBS Live Fresh Student card. It gives you 0.3% cashback on all spends and you can use the same card for transport and ATM transactions. Personally, I prefer major banks like DBS, UOB, OCBC, Citi Bank, or Standard Chartered - I have banking relationship with them and so far their services have been great!

If you want to give other banks a try, then consider Maybank since their card gives 1% cashback on all items, which is higher than DBS.

Here is everything about me and what I do best.

Wait till you start working. else you might lose control...
