I'm 28M non-smoker but recent medical report says I have severe fatty liver. Will I be subject to any exclusions, and should I stick to my existing plan or switch plans?

Currently have an IP with ntuc income (standard), Aviva mindef n mha group term life & group accident.

Wanna get higher coverage now. However, my health checkup in end 2019 surfaced that I have severe fatty liver. Will this have any complications for my health insurance / will I likely be subject to any exclusions? What's the best course of action to take to maximise my insurance?

There is no way for us to know the answer without submitting your case and latest medical report to the insurance company for their underwriting. Here is what I will suggest for you to do:

Insurance Portfolio Summary

Firstly, one of the most important things to do is to have a complete understanding of your existing insurance portfolio. Through this process, it allows us to understand the coverage that we have, any financial gap, as well as to find out whether we are overpaying for our insurance policies.

Key Reasons Why:

Why Every Client needs an Insurance Policy Summary

For your healthcare insurance, we need to evaluate its adequacy. For this purpose, you may wish to speak with your agent to find out whether you should enhance the plan to fit into your needs.

For your group term life, you may wish to evaluate the pros and cons for the long-term.

As for personal accident coverage, you may wish to consider getting a more comprehensive coverage that includes accident medical reimbursement. In most cases, such coverage is of higher value.

In terms of future planning, we need to know your medical condition in future detail before we can discuss on possible planning for your future.

I share quality content on estate planning and financial planning here.

Hi Anon,

In regards to your case, if you change the IP there might a possibility of an exclusion for hospitalisation due to fatty liver. However if you are more concerned abour having more coverage, then yes you could submit your case for preliminary under-writing and see what the insurer says before deciding on the switch.

Also if you are okay with the exclusion for fatty liver, you still have medishield life for coverage for your current condition if you choose to be warded in a B2/ C class ward in the government restructured hospital actually.

You should consider looking at Critical Illness coverage as well as I think that would provide you and your family protection in that area too.
