I have a friend who is considering to leave her job for more money, even though she is happy and content in the current position. What would you do?

Over the course of my short career, I’ve met many disgruntled colleagues with many reasons for leaving their jobs for better conditions. However, i have rarely encountered this case. A friend wanted to forgo what she defines as a happy job for something that earns her more. No doubt the next job can also bring happiness but the uncertainty is real.

She currently has an above median level income which statistically implies a good enough level.

Would you forgo happiness for money?

Yes. Money can find anywhere, mental health is very precious.

I read a book called “Barking Up the Wrong Tree (The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong)” by Eric Barker.

It’s a good book to read if you want but here’s a part of it that I took away from reading it.

Basically, in life, before setting off to do something you want to set a goal and purpose of doing it. And once you have set it, it should be more or less be that way. Now when you start working towards it, you wanna give your all in getting to the goal. Once you reach the goal, stop. Don’t chase any further. This is because if you chase further, you will drain yourself way more than you can. And maybe you reach beyond your goal, but you would be far less satisfied if you had stayed with your goal.

The same can be for a job. Personally I haven’t start working. But my goal is to have a fun and exciting 9-6 job, no OT and no weekend work. Target pay is 2x my expenses so that I can still save and invest. If I were to get exactly this kind of job, but someone offers to pay me double but I gotta OT and work weekend, I’m gonna say no because I believe the original job is enough to give me my goal.

Forgo happiness for money? Never.

Forgo stability for money? Maybe.

Forgo comfort for money? Depends.

Forgo time for money? We all do it, everyday.

Forgo mental health for money? Never.

Some people would equate happiness to being in the comfort zone. No harm trying if your friend is yo...
