For instance, the most competitive investment banking internships at "bulge bracket" banks (these are Tier 1 banks like Goldman) want to see previous finance-related internships that you've done. Many applicants to these super competitive roles had to do previous internships at financial institutions, whether smaller investment banks or other finance-related roles to even get their foot in the door. It can sound rather self-defeating (an internship to get another internship?), but with so much competition, that's just the nature of the game.
