I am thinking of doing a career switch after working for 2.5 years. What is your advice?

A little scared and anxious about “starting from scratch” again. What if i lag behind, what if i cannot find a good job? So many thoughts in my head and just want to hear from other people’s experience and advice.

I have personally went through that phase too. I struggled with the decision for quite a while and eventually, decided to make the jump. In a way, it was a huge change because the sector and job functions are totally different from my previous role.

Some of the points I had considered were:

  1. Whether I will be happy staying or making the switch?

  2. Differences in income

  3. My life plans

The above are the main consideration factors for me. I looked at them in totality as the pros and cons may offset certain issues that we can be worried about.

I had also went through the fear of starting over again and whether the job will be good. I think if you really want to change, just start looking and applying. If you are accepted, then you can look at the compensation package and everything else to decide if that's what you really want or if you can negotiate.

Take baby steps. Start by asking yourself if you do really want to change jobs and why.

Switching career is similar to taking a leap of faith. It brings about a lot of anxiety and it is a risk that you are choosing to take.

Before switching, there are some questions that you need to think through. This will help to reduce the uncertainty/anxiety that you are experiencing. It would also be advisable to evaluate your current financial status before switching.

  • Do you have sufficient funds to fulfil any committed/upcoming expenses?

  • Have you set aside an emergency fund for unexpected cash outflow?

  • Have you decided on your next career path? Is it possible to apply for roles in the new career first before leaving your current job?

  • Is there anything that you have done to move towards this new direction? (e.g. upskilling as mentioned by Bryan below)

  • Do you understand what does the new job scope entails? Would it provides you better assurance to talk to someone from the industry?

At the end of the day, the only competition is yourself. How much you want to succeed in your new career will reflect on your performance.

Wishing you all the best :)

Ask yourself what is your reason for switching? If it's push factors like poor environment/lack of j...
