How to stop being overly addicted to saving money?

I’m a 20-year-old university student. I used to be someone who would spend lots of money on frivolous things. But ever since I started reading up more on personal finance and taking up a part-time job, the act of saving money has slowly become an obsession for me and I feel guilty whenever I treat myself to small things (good food/clothes etc.) once in a while. I also tend to skip meals sometimes just to save a bit more. Would like to find out how to strike a balance between spending and saving.

Find out why you are obsessed - are you financially insecure? Are you competing anyone in your life? Then determine if the reasons are legit. If they are, what other things can you do to deal with it? if not legit, dispell them straightaway and move on.

One thing that can break out of your cycle is to have a system in place. A system of allocating your finances when you get your pay to each bucket of spendings base on percentage would give you an assurance that your finances are in check. Be deciplined to use only that allocated ammount. You may want to consider opening several bank accounts to physically categorise each bucket.

Next, you can track your money in a spreadsheet, categorising your spendings. You can use apps to track your spendings too. Sometimes people need the visual presentation of their finances to be able to properly understand where their money is gone to. You can see how strong your cash flow in and out are, and you may even spot "leakages" (i.e im spending too much on my meals each day, i have been taking GRAB too much etc)

Lastly, understand you are a human and dont be too hard on yourself. We are not perfect beings and embrace flaws as that makes us all unqiue in some ways!

Hopefully this helps to give you the reassurance that you are doing well financially!

I think you have to strike a balance. I would suggest setting a goal of how much to save every month and also keeping track of your expenses. This way you will be able to spend the right amount that you need.

Quite an interesting ah-ha moment you had. maybe you can set a fixed amount to spend and save and adjust until you are happy with it? No right or wrong, no need to compare, just try and test out your own amounts until you deem fit. Cheers!

Haha Never thought saving money would be an addiction to some. Ummm not the best advice though but maybe try gambling :p

Hi, as a frugal spender myself, I often face similar frustrations.

Sometimes it got so bad that ...
