Hey there Anon! This is actually a good question, I will answer it from a perspective of someone who reads the news much like how anyone gets access to them as well.

Here's what I observe. The COVID-19 recession which is happening as we speak seems to be headed towards a long drawn out one.

The MOST important point: This is a VIRUS-BIOLOGICAL led recession, which also means that this sets the timeline on how severe or long it will be.

Compared to the other recessions in the past it was usually led by greed or some banks failing which led to a domino of banks failing and often it was more concentrated in specific sectors only (eg Finance or Property markets)

However, this one is the mother of all recessions as some observers note how essentially this wipes out a huge part of consumer demand in the economy, which puts this into a vicious cycle downwards.

The only thing that can be done is for the government or fed to intervene at extreme lengths which is again what we are observing every day.

Do not know how long bear markets last, but i do know bear market dont end at the beginning of an economic recession
