How easy are claims for disability income insurance?

Hi all

Will disability income insurance cover blindness?

I know that it is from inability to work, but the wordings are rather vague how that is assessed versus ADL from ElderCare Shield

How hard is it to claim disability insurance? Any stories to share from each company?

Also, what are some important things to take note when purchasing disability insurance? Been reading up but not really sure what is deferment period too.

Thanks!

Hi!

Disability income do cover blindness (if it is total and irrecoverable loss of sight of both eyes).

Whether it is hard to claim or not, it really depends on which clause you are looking at, because there are a few different scenarios and criteria.

The clause on the inability to work usually is a temporary payout. Meaning to say if you are totally unable to perform the duties from your own occupation, you will get the payout from the first 24 months. So you need to have a sort of proof that you are unable to perform your own duties.

After the 24 months, if you are still unable to perform any occupation which you are reasonably suited after training, experience or education, then they will continue the payout (generally it is like this, depending on the company, usually the product summary will write out this quite clearly).

The thing to note about disability insurance is the affordability and how much income would be necessary, but most importantly, you can read the clause on how the company do the payout etc. Some requires 2 out of 6 ADLs, some requires 3 out of the 6 ADLs.

Sorry, I have yet to do any claims on disability before so I can't share on any stories regarding this.

Hi anon,

I don't go on Seedly every day, so I just saw your question. Yes, the wording is really vague compared to ADL.

I presume you are talking about blindness with irrevisbile loss of sight.

Now, this will definitely entain a CI payout. But does it mean that someone cannot work forever? Not quite. There are jobs that blind people may be able to do as well. I'll just put this story over here:

Do note that adding my own manager's experience, we've yet to see a single Disability Income claim between our 20 years in this industry, although my manager has 3 clients who did get covered for disability insurance. Thus, I am unable to provide any stories to share. Hope other advisors may be able to plug this gap.

Deferment period refers to how many months you need to wait before being able to receive the payouts; naturally, a longer waiting period would lead to lower premiums.

If you have further questions you can reply to this post, but I can't promise that I'll reply extremely fast as my focus is on my clients first and foremost.

Quite disappointing that all the agents did not come out to address this post. Every time they addre...
