How can people looking to join the retail or e-commerce sector differentiate themselves from other candidates?

I am looking for candidates who are versatile, able to progress with the external factors and able to progress in tandem with the market and customers. A good differentiation is in the ability to embrace new technology and able to connect with the customers. One would realised a key theme is connecting to customers as they are the revenue generator. Without customers, everything else is not relevant.
