If possible, engage a contractor directly but you must have some plans in mind and measurement done together together with the Contractors to ensure you're on the same underatanding. usually ID will mark up the pricing and ultilately they sub-contract the project to a contractor too. And hence they get a cut from the mark up. But, if you don't have any ideas at all, you can then engage an ID and get them to come out with a 3D artist impression (try to nego for free) for you on how it's gonna look lIke. So this gives you an assurance that ultimately hows the reno gonna look like
