I've accumulated 400,000 points so far and it is the first time I'm using the points/miles.
I'm travelling to San Francisco on 10 Dec and coming back on 27 Dec.
Should I go for the waitlist on SIA or ...?

Hi Melissa. 400000 Citi Rewards points convert to 160K KF miles. As a one-way saver award is already 95K miles, you only have enough points to redeem a one way. If that's ok with you, then you can consider booking a SQ J on a one way.
Next, you'll want to consider whether you prefer to fly direct on SQ 32 or have a stopover in HKG on SQ 1. The key difference would be the cabin product (A350 vs B777) plus the fact that a stopover allows you to take a break and freshen up.
Then you'll have to search for award space and pray that it is available. Get on the waitlist and hope it clears.
The alternative is to transfer your Citi reward points to other FFPs. Asia Miles/Etihad come to mind, but you will have to check the award availability and cost of the redemption and do your numbers to see which is worth. Asia Miles could be a good option as you'll get to try the Cathay lounges in HKG, which I hear are very good. Cathay also has good service and a decent cabin product from what I read.
Good luck with your redemption!
