For individual stock trading, is it better to focus on a few stocks based on volatility or spread across many stocks based on sectors?

Are there any other strategies to consider?

From what I recently read from Rich Dad Poor Dad, he claimed diversifiying is for those who want to play it safe and not huge risk takers , thus harder to get out of the rat race.

That being said. I would personally suggest to look at your own risk appeitie and expereince as well. If you are such starting out, I would play it safe and spread across sectors though. However, if you are very confident of the stock that you are going to pick and is willing to see through the red should your sentiments be wrong, then why not maximise your profts? But please do your homework.
