I generally work around self-determined rules, to give x% of my monthly basic and y% of my bonus to my parents. That being said, I still agree with Talkingstock, where it is more important to ensure that the monthly contributions to family is not disrupted. I was jobless for a while in 2019, but my monthly contributions still continued then. I am not sure about yours, but my parents had never expected anything much from me, as they would rather I save the money up for myself for my future. Hence, I think it is more important to ensure that you are not overstretching yourself, and take your monthly family allowance as part of your monthly expenses for your emergency cash on hand.

Would set aside a % of the bonus for family use, but I wouldn't give my parents that amount straight away.

As part of my budget management, I have a few sinking funds for family expenses. Generally, the % of bonus would go to these sinking funds, and then a judgemental call.

If the sinking funds have low balance, or times are difficult, the % from bonus likely to remain in sinking funds to pay future expenses.

If the sinking fund balance is good / healthy, then I would payout more to give them as angpow during CNY.

Personally my own policy and belief no need to give too generous payouts when get fat bonus. Its more important to ensure the monthly amounts they are used to getting are not stopped in bad times. In fact it's abit like fiscal policies, save in good times, and in bad times, they will be glad to know I can still cover the expenses when they can't.

No. But you may wanna consider treating your parents to a delicious meal and buy their groceries for them. They deserve to be treated well most if not all of the time.
