My miles are expiring soon, and I'm travelling to Penang soon to visit some family. Should I bother with redeeming this experience? or is it too much of a waste? am inclined to believe the latter.

If you do not see yourself going for any trip or getting more miles till expiry, you should burn it to penang. Although you will not be able to fully enjoy the experience due to the short duration, but it is still an experience.

As linked by Elijah, Milelion website has written a comprenhensive analysis on utilising the Emirates SGp to penang route.
