I did that at 40 via a mid career change programme and had no regrets.
Much better pay and prospects. Good allowance during the programme duration. Big jump in base salary compared to my previous role as well.

My staff switched from ops to IT job (internal transfer) when she was in her late forties. She got better pay and better career prospect after the switch. I heard the motivation to switch was for higher pay. She is still in the job after 10 years. IT job requires long hours and hard work but could be rewarding. You must have a clear motivation before making the move.
