Most investors I know do not place stop losses. However I operate from a hybrid point of view, where I utilise both technical and fundamentals.
As part of risk management, I place stop losses at no more than 8% of a stock price. On top of that, the losses of each position will not exceed 1.25% of my portfolio value.
It is subjective to many if the stock is dipping. Dipping could be price drops below the buy price, drops below a certain trend or moving average, or a 10%, 20% drop etc.
The above is only a small part, but hope it helps.
