Advise needed on proposal ring - I'm thinking of proposing, but I'm not sure whether to go for big brands or to engage less known curators who can give me the added flexibility of customization

Customizing would be cheaper as I'd be doing away with all the costs needed by big brands for advertising and maintaining inventory + store front.
Moreover, if I do customize, I am able to request to set the stone in a temporary ring mount first, then go ahead to customize the ring according to my gf's wants after she says yes. However, I am not sure whether this would be a good choice as I am not sure what to look out for. Are there any certificates that the stone and ring need to have?
