Why do firms even want to become a conglomerate by acquiring a totally different firm in a totally different industry? what kind of synergy can there even be?

I assume you are asking about Keppel Corp purchasing M1. If you look at their segmented reports, you will realise the need to diversify its revenue stream. This is 1 of the ways to do that.
