What are some things to look out for when taking a personal bank loan?

Hello. If one needs $20k to settle a housing matter, is a bank personal loan the best option?

What does one need to look out for in such loans?

Thank you?

Secured loans have the lowest interest rate since it is a low risk to the bank (and financial institute)

If you can, get a housing loan for the "housing matter"?

If not, how about checking if you have assets for secured loans, such as insurance policies to get policy loan?

If you have a credit card, check out balance transfer promotion. Credit Card balance transfer is usually only 2% p.a for 6 months promotion. DO CLEAR them or renew them when 6 months is up, as then the 24% PA interest rate will kick in.

Renew them means you have to pay the CC balance transfer in full then they will grant a new 6 months promotion balance transfer at the special rates for you.

The best balance transfer promotions are usually from

  • Maybank
  • Standard Chartered bank
  • Citibank
  • UOB

If you have no credit card or unable to get balance transfer (unavailable for some customers), then a personal loan is the best you can...
