What are some of the considerations when changing to use a Credit Card instead of a Debit Card?

As a student, I have always used debit card. I was wondering if I should change to start using a credit card and if so, when I should change?

You can start with a student credit card with a $500 limit when you are in tertiary education (or in NS) and always make sure you have more balance than spending in the associated bank account for auto giro payment! Enjoy :)

Credit is a safer tool for money. I would very much prefer credit card over debit due to it’s safe money feature. However, you need to use it responsibly. Ensure you pay in full every month and continue that discipline no matter what.

If you’re worried about exceeding the limit, you can call the bank to impose a self limit on a monthly basis.

Credit history is important as well to build your credit score for future loans should you need it.

Watch your limit, pay in full and you should be fine. Leave the extra perks and multiple cards at the door until you are sure you can control one.
