I'm quite cash-strapped and i'm looking to get a bridal dress that looks nice and classy but isn't too expensive. I've heard taobao is a good place to look, but i'm not sure. Any recommendations? Is there any way that I can make sure the dress looks classy? there's always so many risks when buying from online stores especially sites like taobao. Are there other good sites that I should look at? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Oh yes! My sister in law actually bought most of her dress and wedding preparation stuffs from taobao. The quality not bad and worth the price! The way to do it is to buy from those with lots of good reviews only. So far all good!

I'm a guy, but I'm not sure you should. It's not easy to get a proper fit on a bridal dress, and I would think that if you have to make alterations after you get the gown shipped over, this will massively delay the process as either you have to find a seamtress, or ship it back.
Better to save a little more and get a proper gown from one of the shops here where you may get a wider selection, face to face consultation, unlimited fittings, but most importantly, proper measurements and alternations. If you need more details such as a referal package to help save costs, feel free to reply to this post. My own package was reasonably cheap by most standards, I felt.
Lastly, I can recommend that you join the closed FB group for SG brides. It's ladies only, but you can post more questions there and all the BTB and graduated Brides will gladly answer you.
I remember my friend bought hers from Taobao, and she looked really good! And the quality was not too bad.
That said, my personal experience with Taobao is that it's pretty hit and miss.
I do agree with you that it probably doesn't make sense to spend too much on the dress!
Hey there! Taobao is really a good place to look, some are really good with good quality! But you need to do your homework - read through the reviews, ask the seller to send you some pictures etc. Do note that probably you have to alter yourself as well. The risk is what you receive is not what you thought it was (common for Taobao). But it's hit and miss actually.
I have a friend who bought her wedding dress from taobao.
firstly she is not poor, just savvy
2ndly once you get the details right the taobao, and ship it here, u still need a local tailor to make it suits u even better. a bit more money but overall still cheaper
she ordered 3 different gowns just so that she has backup (u can order less)
and yes she looks great on her wedding day (and night)
Some wedding vendors are shuddering at the thought of taobao competition.
Go for it - I've seen people around me do it and the dresses turn out very well. Read the reviews thoroughly (and read many of them). To avoid the dress from looking too cheap, avoid designs that are way too basic, avoid designs that depend highly on the fabric to shine through.
If you're cash-strapped but still can afford a little (you have to do your own costing here), you can consider flying to Shenzhen to get your dress tailored. One of my friend did this and she said that even after including all the air tickets etc, the dresses she got was still much much cheaper than in Singapore. So cheap that she ended up tailoring her mom's dress for the wedding as well, with some money to spare.
Why not? There are many many options on taobao, including pretty good quality made to measure dresses. Some items are priced very cheaply, be careful of those, I find that the material is usually isn't good and actual pieces are not like the photos.
Be sure to check out the reviews on the items you are buying. And look for reviews with photos to see if the actual item looks like the photos in the listing.
Another place I like for not too expensive dresses is ASOS. Look out for sale and shopback rebate. The dresses may not be poufy ballgowns but there are some really elegant choices.
but do make sure the measurement u take of your body is done by a friend or someone who is careful with the details. the exact measurement to provide taobao tailor is important.
and buy early, so that in case it does not match ur expectation, you have time to tailor and make it fit.
I think shopping from online for bridal dress is certainly doable, but potentially the risks upside might be high as well, so you might want to cater ample of time in advance to get your dress online instead of doing it last minute. Having said that, maybe one way is for you to "test-wear" the bridal dresses from bridal shops, i.e. go to the bridal shop to try out their gowns so you have an idea what kind of bridal gowns you want, e.g. mermaid or some others, and you can possibly size it. Thereafter, when you feel more confident about what you really desire, then you can shop on Taobao. Better confidence will result in better outcomes. All the best and enjoy the process!
I think taobao is a good option! I've seen real life taobaoed wedding dresses and they look good. Just make sure to buy a tailored to fit one and from more reputable stores.
Then again as others have mentioned taobao is getting more expensive so it may make more sense to rent (especially with shipping)
Hi Anon, Congrats to you BTB. i do have friends buy their gowns from taobao, some is good some turn out is nightmare :( here some of the tips
-knowing which type of gowns suit your body shape
-check the review of the taobao shop, better if got buyer photo for references
-find an affortable tailor in case the gown need some alteration to make it more fitting on you.
-calculate the total cost is it within your budget (Taobao is cheap but sometime include the shipping cost is not worth, unless you buy in bulk) if you budget is about $400 above, i believe there some local bridal provide gowns rental start from $300+ (eg. Fleur d'sign, fairy godmother's bridal, Bqueen, Gown connoisseur...) or you can consider purchase during their sample sales and sell it after your wedding.
Good luck to you :)
Yes you should as long as you like it.. The groom and the bride are the main lead of the wedding so do whatever your budget permits you. I am getting married next year and we got Most of the items from taobao too.. Just get it early so it could be altered but hopefully you won't need to alter it too. Much as it can gets pricey too.. Read more reviews. For the cost, you have to take risks and it will depends on your tolerance level..
Instead of Taobao, use Tmall.com instead. Tmall is a trade site based on Taobao platform, operating from a business to consumer system, whereas taobao is a consumer to consumer system. All goods in Tmall are official and authentic, some goods in taobao came from small village homes...
But read many reviews before buying.
Nowadays, I find the prices in Taobao abit higher.. Sometimes you can get the same thing from local shops at reasonable prices too willing to search for it.. Use the scan 'photo' function at the Tmall platform.. It is very useful to get shops selling similar designs.
If you can be sure you can get a bridal dress which fits you nicely for your occassion why not.
As of now, a lot of e commerce websites are selling things cheaper than the brick and mortar stalls like for like, And with so many credit card hacks and grabpay subsidy, online commerce prices ro consumer has gone down even more

You may consider, but please plan very early as shipping can take up a bit of time. Additionally, size and quality may not exactly fit to your liking. By planning early, this ensures sufficient time for contingency plan should the need arise (hopefully not!).
I have known people who does that, and the quality was good enough that nobody knew that it was from Taobao!
Here is everything about me and what I do best.
Hello! I got my first dress from taobao, and I did have some mistakes.
Firstly I measured myself, and that was a mistake because it ended up being really tight and I had to spend money to get it altered at a tailors. Secondly, what I thought was the style for me turned out not to be fantastic and while I loved it then, as time went on the appeal was lost.
What I suggest is to:
Try on dress at local gown shops to get a feel of what suits your body.
Alternatively, you can go for gown sales, you get to try on the gown and see if you like it, and purchase it at a cheaper price. Fleur d'sign has quite a few gown sales every year.
If you are getting from taobao, will suggest the corset back ones as it's alot easier to fit your body.
All the best!
I think there are people these days also get their wedding decorations and house furniture from taobao. So just go ahead, a cent saved is a cent earned!
