My friend asked me for advice to start playing with stocks because he saw all the US stocks that skyrocketed like crazy due to COVID-19. But I'm also an amateur. Can the experts here weigh in?

I think “playing” is quite scary. Stocks or any market are not to be played with to try out. I think proper research needs to be done, if it’s difficult, then proper training via professional courses.

As a beginner it may be the best decision for you to just start out passively investing into a broad market index fund/ETF.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for active investing, but take your time to learn and understand the market, I would just passively invest and DCA while learning. It may take awhile depending on your interest level and ability to absorb.
