If i'm planning to travel around europe, would it make more sense for me to take the trains between countries? or should i just take domestic flights?

1. Flights within Europe are cheap

2. Rails are the best choice, you get to see the country, you don't have to go through the tedious security checks associated with airports

3. Buses tend to go directly near city centres.

I travelled with a mix of flights and rails, flights for more faraway european countries to save time, and rail for a lot of sightseeing and enjoying the train ride.

Hi Anonymous, all of your expenses can be charged to your miles card to earn miles. Usually 4 miles per dollar (mpd) for every foreign currency spent charged to your card - though whether this is the most cost-efficient method (compared with all the multi-currency offerings) is a seperate question altogether. After spending 6 months in Europe, I personally feel as such:

Flights

+ve: Domestic flights are really cheap on Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizzair, etc.

-ve: Budget airports (very much like Seletar vs Changi airport) can be quite a distance away from city center

Trains

+ve: Euro rail passes are worth if you are indeed travelling across many different cities (compared to buying single trips A to B to C to D). May be the most time-efficient method to get from a city to another.

-ve: Some railway stations are away from city center especially if you get the cheapest tickets to the city.

Buses

+ve: Usually the most cost efficient, brings you straight to the city center 9/10 times, used to book them for red-eye/overnight rides so can save on one night's accomodation

-ve: longer durations, may not be the most comfy compared to the above two.

I think domestic flights in Europe are pretty cheap. The only miles you should use is probably from SG to your first country. Within Europe, it's much easier to go by train honestly, you get to see the beautiful sights and just chill. There would be too much immigration hassle for flights, unless it's a long distance one!

Train is easier and convinent. This is because the train stations move within cities, while in some european countries, their domestic airport is quite far from the cities. The time taken to travel from the city you are in to the domestic airport would have been offset by the train's convinence in Europe
