You should join a lot of events whether that is related to career or not. You will have a higher chance to find a referee who can help you with your future job. Your lecturers are also good referees, so start to chat and make close relationships with them, like with sincerity, not for the purpose of taking advantage of them. In addition, I recommend you add friends and join some job groups on LinkedIn, you may find your referees there. You have to find your referee before you need them, that's the point. Good luck.
You should look for someone who has been working with you for extended periods who will actually know about you, For example, it could your direct superior, project mates, teacher, etc. For referee doesn't have to be reputable/famous, it doesn't change anything about their evaluation of you.
You should always be looking even before you plan to apply for a job. Be nice, be kind and you should have no problem when necessary
