Hi, wanna ask regarding hospitalisation insurance. I declared an ECG checkup and but was rejected by one insurer. Can I try others and be fully covered?

Just submitted an application and declared an ECG I done at a clinic, results was ventricular premature contractions. According to the doctor this is nothing serious and she even wrote a letter clearing me for it. I submitted an application already but the insurer accepted however with heart exclusions - pretty big organ to exclude yeah. If I apply for other insurers what would be the likely outcome? Any recommendations?

Hi Anon,

Hospitalisation/Integrated Shield Plans (IP) only has 3 outcomes:

1) Accepted

2) Accepted with Exclusion

3) Rejected

Unlike Life Insurance there is no loading involved etc. The best way to have gone about it is to go through an Independently-Owned Financial Advisory firm to do a pre-underwriting with all 7 insurers.

A pre-underwriting is your consultant submitting your ECG with medical report etc to find out what is the likelihood of the insurer accepting your case. This will avoid you having a "rejection" by any insurer. A "rejection" by any insurer may increase your risk of getting rejected by other insurers. Having your policy accepted with heart exclusion seems like a not too bad outcome. What you can do moving forward is to do a pre-underwriting or con-current insurance application with the other 6 insurers. With a consistent favorable report on your heart in the future, you can try to appeal to the insurer to lift that exclusion. It is quite likely that the other insurers will include an exclusion on your heart as well.

Hi Anon, I too have a condition and was afraid that I will be given exclusion or loading. I also went to a doctor to do a stress echocardiogram, doctor said it was actually not a problem and gave me the report results and a note to say its ok. So I submitted this to the insurer and luckily they accepted me on standard conditions. My adviser mentioned that if they decided to exclude or load me, I can try other insurers but will need to declare this result to the other insurers. But you never know, the results might differ. Alternatively like what others mentioned, you can appeal to them and have your adviser discuss with them in your behalf. All the best!
