Let me condense 10 years into one sentence.

Buy the S&P500 index. Use Roboadvisers, start as small as $1 a month.

Gone are the days where your minimum transaction is at $8,000 per trade. Roboadvisers are a godsend for the retail investor who wants to get a start in less than 30 minutes without having to spend years learning about investing.

Open an account with TD Ameritrade, Interactive Brokers or Saxo Capital
Research, research, research + learn, learn, learn
Get started with ETF first such as VOO and QQQ
Invest in some stocks you are comfortable such as Google, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, etc
Research on growth stocks and invest a small amount in them to get yourself comfortable with taking higher risk (which comes with higher reward)

For a start, I'd think USD 15,000 - 20,000 would be a good portfolio size with 10-15 stocks....
