As fiat is so ingrained in daily usage, spending cryptocurrency usually involves transaction and conversion fees. Do you think this inefficiency will prevent the adoption of cryptocurrency?

The adoption of cryptocurrency takes time i suppose, however the underlying problem they definitely could solve is the remittence issue. Unlike traditional ways, transferring BTC or ETH is definitely faster and goes through 0 intermediaries which is definitely lesser transaction and conversion fees.
