If you are serious about the miles game, get a few miles cards where you can strategise spending the earn 4mpd. Eg citi rewards for online or grab uob preferred platinum visa for paywave dbs altitude can be your go to card for generic spend.

What do you mean by transactions that do not earn miles at a meaningful rate? As far as I’m aware, transactions such as insurance, payment to Govt agencies that do not earn miles, will not earn cash back with a cash back card. remember that most cashback cards require minimum spending to earn any “meaningful“ cashback. Otherwise the rebate can be as pathetic as 0.1%. Even a generic miles card such as uob prvi will be able to generate at least 1.4mpd for spending from the first dollar. If you are serious about miles hacking, it really should be a “miles and more miles“. There is no such thing as “miles or nothing” :)

For SQ, children (Above 2 years) pay the same amount of miles as adults for award ticket redemptions. Hence it makes almost no sense to redeem an economy class ticket for children. for business ticket redemptions, You need to evaluate if this is worth it for children. To some, the extra attention from the air crew, flat beds, extra luggage, comfort on a Long flight while travelling with young children will mean a great deal.

Many cards offering 4mpd for spending in selected categories as others have pointed out. For generic spending, you may want to look at uob prvi visa or master for the higher mileage (1.4mpd), especially if each spend is typically above $30

Earning miles should not be the objective of any spending. Rather, the right way to look at it is how much miles can you get, what is the best way to accrue the miles, for this particular spending that you need to make anyway. This applies whether you are looking at miles or cash rebate.

Many times 0% instalment plans will not earn you miles or cashback - there are some exceptions. Note however that there is usually an admin fee if you want to prepay early. This leaves you beholden to the bank, especially if they charge you an annual fee for the credit card and you are not able to waive it. If this happens you either pay the annual fee or pay the admin fee to prepay and then cancel the card.

Never let credit card rewards (miles or cash back) drive your spending. Take any rewards earned as a bonus, not as something you need to get.

For me, I use the reasonable price/price I am willing to pay for a flight ticket as reference and compare this against the miles required to redeem an award seat. This would mean my valuation of a mile can range from ~1.6cents per KF miles for an economy saver redemption to 4 cents per KF mile for a business saver redemption. I also take this as meaning I am getting a rebate as high as 16% on cards that generate 4mpd.

Depends on where you are going and what are your spending habits. While the Citibank PM card is a good general spend card for miles accrual, you are not optimising your spending by using only the Citibank PM card given its accrual rate of 1.2mpd. There are many cards out there offering 4 miles per dollar for spending in certain categories: - UOB Preferred Plat Visa - 4mpd for paywave - Citibank Rewards - 4mpd for online/Grab/shopping - OCBC Titanium Rewards - 4mpd for shopping - OCBC 90N - ongoing promotion 4mpd for foreign currency spend. Be strategic in your spending and use a range of cards that can maximise your earn rates - you may just cut the 5-7 years by ~70% to 2-3 years!
