How useful is NTUC Membership for employee benefits/rights? With recession, retrenchment is expected. How are workers protected by Unions?

Bascially you are not protected from retrenchment. But at times of retrenchment, union will help to fight for a fairer/reasonable retrenchment package as well as providing support for new job hunting.

Just curious: how many of you have achieved more than 100k in your CPF special account? And at what age did you achieve it?

It really depends if you are doing RSTU or any VC to your MA account. As these actions will directly accelerate your CPF SA accumulation. But assuming that you have max out your income ceiling of 6k and you are not doing any topups, it will take generally 15 years to fill up your SA to 100k.

Most of the time a certification can only land you an opporunity to get a job. You need to ace the interview to land yourself in that job.

It is not true that malaysian salary will always be lower than singaporean salary. But it is true that malaysians are willing to take less salary compared to singapore on the same job, because of the x3 factor. cost of living for the household for a malaysian supporting family in malaysia vs the same settings in singapore paints the picture quite clearly.

My recommendation is to focus on savings and emergency funds first. You should not jump into investment for the sake of investing. Also, with limited capital, your margin will be eroded by high commissions. Take the time to understand more on investment options before you act. You can start off with some financial blogs to increase your awareness. Of course, if you really want to invest, the better option will be through ETFs for better spread.

Would investing in a property as an EP holder help with my chances of a PR? Does anyone have experience around that?

The formulae to attaining PR is a top secret government agenda. There are no actual proven track records on how PR are given. Some even say that your investment outside of Singapore could also affect their decision, such as remitting most of your salary back to India, or having multiple property elsewhere other than Singapore). But of course these are not proven as well.

The main impact to most of the current users of DBS multiplier account is the loosing of investment category. Assumption is that most of us uses SSB dividends as the source to hit the investment category. To counter this, most pple will either take up a low-cost insurance or a RSP investment into STI or ABF ETFs. However, good to note that these options are eligible for 12 months only. There are many good articles out there that explain the workaround to this 12 months eligibility, but they are not so important now as we anticipate new changes towards year end on the terms again.

What are the significant expenses ahead that I should start planning for, as a young guy who is getting married soon? Wedding, housing, car, kids, parents etc. How are you planning for retirement?

Some tips based on experience here. 1) Try not to spend too much on the ring (its really not as important as we think only me and my spouse views ) 2) Try to avoid paying for additional photos beyond your wedding studio package (we hardly look at the album a couple years into marriage) 3) Try to get a house near to your parents/in-laws to enjoy the housing grant (we dont get to enjoy these grant when we got our house in 2013 at the peak!) 4) Try to fixed a renovation budget and stick to it (a simple contemporary style can be cheap and superd looking at the same time) 5) Try to compare and get your electronics all from the same place to get the best deal (negotiate when required, they give good discounts or vouchers) 6) Try to get a car only when you need it (i.e. when you are going to have a child and when it really becomes a need rather than a want) 7) Try to opt for cheaper baby delivery venues (we did thompson and finding that NUH or KK is actually equaly great) 8) I can go on forever on this but i think this is great for now.
