Would you invest in a career switch to tech in Singapore?

Ive been in the oil and gas industry for the past 5 years as an engineer. While the money is decent, I’m wondering if theres growth in this area, or if gaining skills to work in tech can bring my more opportunities in the future. I’m looking at software engineering, UIUX or digital marketing.

'Technology' is still quite a generic term - could mean anything from IT services to growth tech. From what you've mentioned, the examples are quite varied too. Digital marketing and UIUX has huge potential because of the rise in software innovation so as long as you're focused, you should be in good hands.

Hey there! The market moves in cycles, demand vs supply.

Its interesting how just a couple of decades ago, the courses like computer science are shunned, straight 'C's would allow you to study the course in a local unversity. Today, you would need almost straight 'A's to enter the same course. I would say that currently, there is a huge boom in demand in the tech sector as we are moving towards a digital age and it is definitely important to pick up tech-related skills. But with that said, the term 'working in tech' is such a blanket term. Are you looking for a full carrer switch into tech firms or picking tech skills to upgrade yourself in your current industry?

I'm sure your skills as an engineer are valuable too and if you were to switch to an entirely different industry, it could be a drastic change. You could also consider the option of picking up relevant tech skills to hone your edge in your current industry as well. I.e. Industry 4.0, analytics etc. All these tech skills are also important in the traitional industries as well.

But of course, the most important thing is your motivation. Is it primarly money or because you have an interest in upgrading your skills and become better? If the motivation is money then you would have to ask yourself if you enjoy the tech life. i.e. as a software engineer, can you sit infront of the computer an entire day, trying to fix a bug in a code? In UI/UX , how interested are you in design, creating human-centric pages, and the love for attention to details? Like what the others have already mentioned. It would be good to pick up online courses and explore to see what you like. It wouldnt hurt to also talk to peers doing these jobs to understand more about their day in a life.

Yes definitely, though it also depends on your time horizon and years till retirement.

I'd always tell myself that "it's always better to be a disruptor than be disrupted"

Tech is fun but make sure you enjoy your work. UIUX / digital marketing pretty much focus on user journey.

1) You must love tech alot to make the switch

2) be prepared to spend lots of time learning other things on the job

3) Choose an industry you like for tech work.

Tech definitely has a growing demand and we are more reliant on it too. However, you should depend o...
