I came across Thermomix which helps to cook many different types of food. Apparently, you just have to add the ingredients to the machine and the cooking is taken care of. Anyone tried it before? Is it recommended to buy one?

My mom actually bought one many months ago. It's pretty handy especially for first time cookers (like me) since all i have to do is just to follow the instructions given. Also helps to save time as she can continue to do her cooking the normal way while another dish is in the Thermomix.
If you cook often, maybe it could be a worthy investment. Food taste really good too.

Wouldn't pay so much to automate my cooking, rather just order takeaway food...

I think the value proposition here is about being in control.
Buying a thermomix allows you to cook without monitoring and also control the ingredients put into the food.
Compare to $3.50 chai fan with no control of the amount of oil and salt / etc.
So what is your end goal if you want to spend a few thousands?
Alternatively just do a life cycle costing to understand the breakeven period. Else i do not see why you want to ask this question.
