KrisFlyer's key advantage is that they don't have fuel surcharges on redemptions. you'll only pay airport taxes. in contrast, many other frequent flyer programs (FFPs) may charge hundreds, or in extreme cases, thousands of fuel surcharges on round trip redemptions. That's kind of ridiculous on what's supposed to be a "free ticket".
at the end of the day, KrisFlyer is also the easiest program to earn miles with in SG. taking grab? earn krisflyer miles (Grabrewards). dining with chope? earn krisflyer miles (chope$). pump at esso? earn krisflyer miles (esso smiles). shopping at cold storage? earn krisflyer miles (tapformore points)
KrisFlyer does have some sweet spot redemptions- Singapore to Jo'burg/Cape Town is only 49K miles one-way business class, fantastic for 11+ hours of flying
also, singapore to istanbul is similarly 49k miles in business class- and then you're just a short hop away to the rest of europe.
krisflyer allows you to redeem very good value Alaska Airlines awards for domestic US travel starting at 7.5k miles, or domestic Australia awards on Virgin Australia from 11k miles.
that's not to say that other FFPs have no value- they absolutely do. but KrisFlyer is simple enough for most people to get started, and I suppose everyone wants to experience that legendary SQ service in First/Business class
