Thinking about ways to maximise my card points and hopefully not expiring because I have no trips planned out yet.

Devaluation of miles is very painful. Aaron has given a very good answer on miles card that doesnt expire, but I would recommend you have a view on when your trips are going to happen, and use the appropriate high yielding miles card based on your trips.

I will go with Citi PremierMiles. It is a simple utility card that works for most purposes.

The responses so far should be a good gauge of the cards you can look to apply for.
Hacks and tips wise, every card has slight benefit over others so there isn't one clear winning card. Could be worthwhile to consider having a number of cards as explained here (https://milelion.com/2019/09/21/miles-game-star...).
Just to chime in, it could also be good to consider begining the miles journey with an end goal in mind in terms of the redemption you are aiming for, and sticking with it over the long run. That way, you remain in check of your progress and motivated in this miles game.
