Credit Cards

Which credit card is good for an undergrad? Also is $10k savings good enough for a 24yo?

I’m a 24yo undergrad working while studying and i’m looking to get my first CC but a bit stumped by all the choices.... My gross income is abt $2k and I have about $10k in savings. I wouldn’t say I spend a lot per month so which CC would be good in this case? Also I have 3 accts (POSB, OCBC & StandChart) and im thinking to cut down 1 acct, which would be the best to close?

At your current life stage, I would suggest either Maybank or DBS live fresh student.

Depending on your spending habits:

Maybank- More useful for frugal spenders with the attractive 1 percent rebate on any spending

DBS - more "lavish" spender, 0.25 percent on other spending but it has quite a lot of promotion for stuff like macs and consumer electronics (sometimes)

Hope it helps

Hi Anon,

Working while studying is extremely tiring, good job and keep up the hustle!!

With an income of $2k (per month, I assume), you won't be eligible for most entry-level credit cards that require an annual salary of $30k, so you're left with student credit cards. Among them, I'd say there aren't any fantastic options. I'd recommend either Maybank eVibes or CIMB AWSM because they both give 1% cashback on eligible spending, which is the best you can get. Note that student credit cards only have a credit limit of $500/month. Personally, I wouldn't recommend using them for your daily expenses because the rewards rate is comparable with the SC cashback debit card. Instead, I'd use the student credit card to build credit score, and have most of my expenses on my debit card. You can check out this post for more details about credit score!

Between the 3 accounts, I'll probably close OCBC. POSB definitely has to stay because of convenience - it is the easiest to find DBS/POSB ATMs in SG. I assume StandChart refers to Jumpstart, which currently offers the highest interest rate among savings accounts for students right now - so that gets to stay as well. By elimination, OCBC will be the one to go.

Hope this helps!
