When was the last time you thought money would make you happy, but it didn't ?

I've been hearing a few painful stories both in my inner circle and online lately, especially in covid times. I thought if everyone could band together to share our experiences, we could help those who come after us to make better life-money decisions.

So, people of Seedly, when was the last time you thought money could make you happy, but it didn't when you finally got / spent it ? And what did you learn ?

Yes to the first part, I keep thinking that money can make me happy.

If I have the money, I wouldn’t worry about paying the COV for a resale HDB and be happy.

If I have the money, I wouldn’t worry about losing my job again and be happy.

The second part hasn’t happened as I don’t have the money yet.

What have I learnt?
In SG, it’s better to have money most of the time.
Whether happiness comes with it.
I don’t know.

Life is brutal and relentless.

I'll turn your question on its head.

I used to think that no amount of money can make you happy.

Then my salary increased and I found that saving money became much easier. And yes, I became happier.

I still think that no amount of money can truly solve all your problems. But if it's a problem that money can solve, it's not really a problem.

I think a lot of us struggle with the same problem - not that we have too much money and we aren't happy, but that we are unable to be happy because we have not enough. So we tell ourselves that money won't make us happy to resolve the cognitive dissonance.
