I’d say once the relationship starts getting serious and you’re beginning to make financial decisions together.
You don’t necessarily need to combine everything, but it’s useful to understand what each person already has, especially hospitalisation, life/TPD and critical illness coverage. It also helps to know whether either partner has existing commitments such as a mortgage or family members who depend on their income.
For me, the main point isn’t that couples need identical policies. It’s making sure there won’t be a major financial gap if something happens to either person.
