When does my credit score start? Does paying my phone bill late affect my credit score rating?

I'm 20 and don't have any credit cards yet but I've paid my phone bills late :( Will this affect my credit score? If yes, how do i start building it up?

Breaking down the question:

1) When does my credit score start? It starts when you apply for your 1st credit card. Technically you have no credit score because the banks don't know how trustworthy you are in paying back credit card bills. As long as you do not have bad debts with banks, banks are okay to issue you credit card and from there on, build up. Repay your bills on time, don't take too much loan and you should have a good to perfect credit score. Basically, don't become a risk to a bank.

2) Telco bills are sperate from credit score. Credit score only see credit cards and loans and it has to do with banks only. Telco bills are only for telco companies only. No link between both. However, you should be paying phone bills on time. Set up GIRO for recurring payment. Simple and don't need to think too much every month.

Credit Score will only be affected by Credits such as loans or credit cards.

Telco bills is not affected. However, telco have their own credit system for customer. Having a bad payment record may affect you signing up for new lines or services in future.

To 'recover' your telco score, simply just pay your bills on time.

To start building up your credit score for future loans, can take up student credit card and make sure you pay your bills on time.
