Before TWS?

I was working in an ad agency creating content and other creative work.

I noticed that many of my peers in advertising didnā€™t have the attention span needed to read through lengthy articles, so I thought of created something that was more accessible and humorous to sustain their attention.

Wei Choon worked in a med-tech firm as a marketing manager. He started adult life as an idealistic fine arts grad wanting to be an animator, but after finding out that life as an animator meant incredibly long hours for very little pay, he picked up multiple skills and became a teller of stories and maker of social media content instead.

Iā€™ve always found his transition from a broke artist to someone who was more financially awakened inspiring. Thatā€™s a huge mindset shift. For someone to grasp reality so keenly and so quickly, and take immediate action after is quite rare nowadays.

If an idealistic artist who thought money was taboo can cultivate a relationship with money; anyone can.

I found the courage to work on TWS full time because Iā€™ve quite bit saved up since entering the workforce in 2014. With quite a lot of side hustles and some luck, I saved my first $100,000 when I was 28.

Since then, Iā€™ve increased my pay and continued to live below my means.

The result is that Iā€™m a point of my life that I can try to take a few risks, and Woke Salaryman is one of them.

No doubt, leaving a stable job (shout out to my ex-bosses at 99.co) is uncomfortable and scaring, but money helps buy some form of mental and physical security ā€“ I donā€™t think I would have started Woke Salaryman if I just have 2 months of savings.

It also helps that I find Woke Salaryman probably the most meaningful thing Iā€™ve done in my life.

After years of trying to get people to buy things (advertising), I now get tell people to spend wisely, or even donā€™t spend. I also get to talk to many young people about their money and career problems and provide inputs on the lives.

Growing up, I was quite a clueless kid for much of my teens, so this is something I would never have imagined.

Our community also lets us know that they find our content helpful, so thatā€™s really encouraging as well. I think the long-term goal of life is to have purpose.

The future is definitely uncertain and I donā€™t know what tomorrow might bring for TWS, but I do know that if I look back 30 years from now and I can say I did something pretty meaningful.
