If you aren't able to provide contacts in your previous job (e.g. this is your first job, or you didn't get along well with your previous colleagues), then you can provide your friends as references. This only works if you're still junior and relatively fresh out of school (e.g. 1 or 2 years out of university, polytechnic, etc.).
If you've been working for several years and can't provide professional references, then that will raise some eyebrows. It's not an absolute deal breaker if you've performed well in your interview.
