Home baking certainly has become one of the most popular ways for people to earn a good source of extra income! Here's a set of tips that I think aspiring home bakers will find useful :)

a. Summary of how to become a home baker:

  1. Perfect your product: Make sure your products are excellent - sounds obvious, but many an F&B venture has failed because the founders didn't take sufficient time to really perfect what they were selling.

  2. Invest in a good set of equipment: It pays to invest in good equipment which will last longer, and allow you to bake delicious products. No need for anything expensive or high-end, just some well-made products will do.

  3. Perform market research: Know what your competition is selling, and for how much. Perform your own recipe development and set prices to stand out.

  4. Ensure regulatory compliance: See point (b) below for rules to comply with.

  5. Leverage social media marketing: Use the power of imagery to really draw attention to your business. The best part is that it doesn't cost anything except time and effort.

  6. Protect your business against food poisoning liability: Get $500,000 baker's insurance for only $10/month.

For a full explanation, read this guide on how to start your own home bakery in Singapore.

b. Yes, there are certain rules that you're required to comply with. Summary of home baker regulations in Singapore:

  1. You can't buy paid advertisements - this means no promoted FB/IG posts, etc.

  2. You can't put up physical signboards advertising your business

  3. You can't sell your home baked goods to retail establishments

  4. You can't employ people outside of your own household (i.e. people you live with)

  5. You can't load/unload goods onto trucks/vans, meaning no heavy production quantities

  6. You must comply with food hygiene rules laid out by the SFA (Singapore Food Association)

Contrary to what some might initially believe, you do not need a license to operate a home baking business.

These rules, and more, are covered in greater detail in this guide.

c. There is no difference in rules between a home baker and home chef. Both are considered home based food businesses. If you take in clients into your home (e.g. for private dining home chefs), do note that you're required to have SafeEntry protocols to faciliate contact tracing.

Have fun baking delicious treats :)
