I work in the civil service but I really need extra cash so is there any way of earning it does working as freelance count as going against the rules?

Since you tagged this as National Service, I'll assume you're a NSF. Generally, while yes, moonlighting is not allowed as an NSF, the rules are quite slack when it comes to regulating NSFs. Of course, this would also vary based on your superiors as i would think some regulars are more strict than others. I've known many NSFs who taught tuition on weekends, or did freelance photography on the side. I'm not saying to break the rules but just remember the 9th core value of the SAF π
