Couple Finance

What matters should couples talk and decide upon before getting married? eg. finances, kids...

Also, how do married couples split their finances? how much emergency savings should we have? we are planning for 1 child in the near future, and are trying to conceive now.

It depends on your earning power, and your agreement with one another.

Important to make sure both are in sync and happy with the outcome. There is no absolute right split when it comes to finance.

Personally, below is my split with my partner (considering that im earning more than her at abt 60:40 ratio)

  • For housing related expenses like property tax, utility, broadband, s&cc, all under me.
  • For home mortgage, its 60:40 split.
  • For grocery/food expenses, never really keep track but more of a shared burden. Sometimes i pay sometime my wife pay.
  • For child expenses like childcare and enrichment classes, its a 50-50 split.
  • For car expenses like car loan, road tax, servicing, seasonal parking, petrol, insurance, its 60:40 split.
  • For other big one-time spendings such as holidays, its 50:50.
  • Before marriage: ensure both have the same frequency, want to have kids, have the similar spending habit & ok to 50-50 with u.

  • How to Split finance: when bill for housing and kids come, just 50-50. Personal bill just settle ourself.

  • Emegency fund at least $50k for each.

  • Keep it simple.
