The card mainly serves to facilitate overseas spending. However, you are required to fund your account with the desired currency beforehand ("simply fund your HSBC Everyday Global Account with the foreign currencies that you intend to spend and transact with your HSBC Everyday Global Debit Card").
For small purchases, I would go with other multi-currency wallets/accounts such as YouTrip and Revolut since they do not have a minimum balance of $2,000.
