Yang Teng gave a very good overview.

Just to add on a few from the perspective of a financial planner:

  1. Get yourself adequately covered with a Hospitalisation Plan
  2. Make sure you purchase a Term insurance to cover your gaps. You can check out Aviva Group Term (SAF) if you are a local.
  3. Make sure you try to save at least 20% of your income for your retirement
  4. Always have an emergency fund of about 6 to 12 months of your expenses
  5. Look out for viable opportunities to upskill yourself

I'm not sure if it's the best(s) but i've got a few:

  • cut spending to the minimum
  • always save
  • try to look for ways to advance your career, and take the opportunity when given
  • do not be tempted by quick gains (lotteries, scam investments, some insurance)
  • always look for ways to upgrade yourself
