What if a person who got sued is not poor enough to get a free lawyer but poor enough to not hire a lawyer on his/her own? How does the system ensure that poor people have chances of winning lawsuits?

It seems that average people are usually on the losing end, gets drained financially from lawsuits and eventually lose the cases.
