It's an OK card, but there are better cards out there.

The AMEX Personal Card's prime benefit is the accumulation of AMEX points. This is basically a restricted cashback - you can only redeem AMEX points via the AMEX Membership Rewards Programme.

The Amex Personal Card gives you 2 points per $1.60 spent, which = 1.25 points per $1 spent.

Let's take a look at some rewards that you can redeem with these points:

  1. $20 Swensen's voucher: 3,800 points. That means you have to spend $3,040 to redeem a $20 voucher, which = implied cashback of 0.65%.

  2. Armand de Brignat Brut Gold Champagne: 83,200 points. That means you have to spend $66,650 to redeem this bottle, which = implied cashback of 0.75%.

  3. $50 Best Denki voucher: 10,600 points. That means you have to spend $8,480 to redeem a $50 voucher, which = implied cashback of 0.58%.

Also, the list of redeemable products/services under the Rewards Programme is not particularly comprehensive. That will limit your enjoyment. A good cashback card is better, since it can put money in your pocket to spend however you like, whereever you like.

If you want to go with AMEX, you're probably better off with a solid cashback card like the AMEX True Cashback Card. This card has 1.5% unlimited cashback. You also get 3% cashback for the first 6 months. The min. income to apply is $30,000 for both the AMEX Personal Card and True Cashback Card. You can also consider the Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback (1.5% cashback) or the UOB Absolute Cashback (1.7% cashback).
