What are the steps you would take to plan for retirement?

Came across a random video titled "8 things to do when planning for retirement" which touched on a few points like cutting back on unnecessary spending, budgeting properly, accounting for inflation, and even stuff like planning how you’ll spend your time in retirement.

Got me thinking — in the Singapore context, how would you plan for retirement?

Is it just about CPF and investments? Or are there other things you think about, like where to live, healthcare costs, whether to downgrade your flat, etc.?

Also curious how others plan for non-financial parts — like staying active, social circles, or even part-time work to stay busy.

What’s your approach (or ideal plan), especially with the cost of living these days?

  1. Financially, I would start early, as early as my first paycheck went into investments (or at least savings for a start, for those who are very risk adverse). In my opinion, any form of investing, be it property investment, SSBs or ETFs has the ability to grow your wealth - and there's no one size fit all approach so everyone has to figure out what's comfortable for them.
  2. Career wise, plan well as this impacts your peak earning power which affects the ability to save/invest more.
  3. Socially, seek to maintain a healthy relationship between work and life, while friends are important, family should be at the core of your plan - look at how you can contribute, be it with time or effort or money.
  4. Health, maintain a healthy lifestyle from young so this carries onto your retirement days, it goes without saying that you want to be able to enjoy retirement in good health. Importantly, look out for what you ingest, you are what you eat.
  5. Experience, don't forget to enjoy life while planning for retirement. We so often get lost in 5, 10, 30 years plan that we forget to stop and appreciate the current moment. With proper planning, the occasional short getaways and cheap thrills won't hurt.

Hope it helps some readers with respect to how i feel retirement planning should be!
