What are some popular dividend paying stocks

I am thinking of adding dividend stocks into my current portfolio which consists of S&P500 and NASDAQ ETFs.

May I know what are some popular dividend stocks that people go for (regardless Singapore or overseas stocks)?

P.S. Actually, is there a need to invest in dividend stocks if my S&P500 ETF can probably result in higher returns? Am I better off investing the additional money into S&P500?

Hi Jim,

I think whether or not there's a 'need' to invest in dividend stocks depends on what your investment goals/preferences are.

If you want to maximise growth and build wealth fast, then you should pick investments based on this, regardless of whether they pay dividends. As you mentioned, an S&P 500 ETF is an example of an investment that likely outweighs the dividend yield of most stocks/REITs.

If you want to build a passive income stream, you probably want to invest in dividend stocks rather than growth stocks/ETFs. This is because dividends are paid out automatically and is a rather smooth process. But if you only invest in growth stocks, you would need to sell off some shares to generate an income.

I'd say which one you choose generally depends on your phase of life, ie younger people tend to go for growth and middle-aged/older people tend to go for dividends. Of course this isn't set in stone and you should just choose whichever strategy you're most comfortable with.

Hope this helps!

To find good dividend stocks,

the holdings of defined 'Dividend ETFs' could be interesting.

Often the companies publish the complete current holdings (not only the top 10) on their websites or in the ETF reports.

The SP500 dividend yield however seems fine already.

Japanese Itochu (JP:8001) seems dividend nice to me. They are among so many other things co-owner of Taipei 101.
