What alternatives to structured products are there to provide access to otherwise 'closed' investment markets?

I'm looking at some material and noticed that they described structured products as 'providing access to investment markets that are otherwise closed to investors'. I assume this refers to external markets and/or securities such as the S&P500? Do correct me if my understanding is incorrect?

What alternatives to structured products are there for this purpose?

This most probably means 'private equity'.

With even China opening up there are so many non-closed opportunities, so much so that we should not aim for these most risky & intransparent & inefficient 'structured products'.
