It is not in the best interests of employers to have an open salary culture. That is a fact. When they do salary negotiations, they often use your previous salary as a baseline.
There are plenty of discrimination scandals that occurred recently due to salary differentials. Something which can be addressed if there is an open salary culture. Not surprisingly, sales organizations never have salary discrimination issues as the remuneration is based directly on performance.

This can really bite you back. I make a habit not to disclose my salary to anyone, especially relatives as they tend to rear their heads out of the dark when they hear you're doing pretty well for yourself. Jealousy also ensues then. For a good response, saying something like "I'm earning well to get by" helps.
